It had been rumored for a while, and it is now official. SEGA and Sonic Team have revealed more information about the next modern Sonic game that had been teased earlier this year. The game is officially called Sonic Frontiers, an “open-zone-inspired experience”. According to SEGA, you’ll be able to “speed through the Starfall Islands”. Ian Flynn is the game’s story-writer.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka described the game as “a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike”. Sonic Frontiers will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on Holiday 2022. An official tweet can be seen down below.

Lol. I was just joking to myself at the beginning of the trailer that Sonic Team would eventually get around to making “Sonic of the Wild.” Thirty seconds later, there it is! Complete with the meandering piano! Unbelievable.
They hired a guy to help them out with this special project. But, I don’t know the guy name through.
Am bet it runs like dogs**t on Nintendo switch too.
Running fine does not equate to running like dog poop.
What the f*ck…WTF? Sonic games run like crap in Nintendo switch, just deal with it. :,D
He probably just saying that because the Nintendo Switch is not powerful enough to handle it and its not in 4K graphics hardware even so the hybrid system received a lot of supports from third party developers and sales for the system has been selling like hotcakes.
If sonic team were skilled they’d find a way to make the game run at least at 30fps…i am really worried about the switch performance, Sonic sells better on nintendo platforms and sega knows it and the least we deserve is more effort on their part.
I hope they make me eat my words but so far i am not expecting a good performance on swich.
Honestly it has potent. Using a fast character like Sonic in an open-world could be fantastic but I have zero confidence they will nail the execution and jsut try to replicate BOTW
Still on the bench but alot more promising looking wise compared to forces first look, my only concern is lack of platforming and enemies for real, but that’ll most likely be shown off at e3.
I’m still not getting my hopes up for this yet. Sonic has never been in this type of gameplay style and he’s nothing more than a gimmick device these days by some fans. Most Sonic fans expects something new from Sonic Team.
My biggest hope is that the gameplay allows for a Chao garden this time. I can see why they wouldn’t make a Chao garden for the linear hallway games, but an open world style game could be perfect for a Chao garden. Maybe you could even stumble upon them with no loading screen! That would be really, really cool, especially if they acted as warp locations too! Please…
IIRC, the reason they stopped including Chao raising in Sonic games is because the sole creator of A-Life left Sonic Team somtime after SA2. It would be great to get that feature back, but I wouldn’t hold my breath unless some Sega employee suddenly decides they want to put in a ton of extra work
IIRC, the reason they stopped including Chao raising in Sonic games is because the sole creator of A-Life left Sonic Team sometime after SA2. It would be great to get that feature back, but I wouldn’t hold my breath unless some Sega employee decides they want to dump hundreds of hours into a mostly unrelated side project
Everyone remember back in July 2016 after Sonic Forces reveal, IGN said Sonic was never that great during that event. Well, in this new game reveal if Sonic Team nailed this game next year, then this could prove IGN wrong. Also, its really nice that Sonic was at the game awards for the first time and got the spotlight back.
Definitely not feeling it from the trailer. I know it’s nowhere near complete, but the level design looked and felt so extremely……vacant. The supposed new villain with that voice looks like yet another “tried too hard to make an over-the-top or cool character”. It kinda looks like they’re were more focused with making something like Breath of the Wild than their own thing. Gonna hold my doubts for now tho, hopefully I’m wrong and they actually learned something from nearly a decade of screw ups.
One thing is for certain tho; I sure as hell won’t be getting this for switch. The graphics look like they could be promising and if it’s gonna be open world, then yall know full well it aint gonna run all that great on the switch. I’ll stick to the PS4 version for sure.
Oh, yea it’s gonna be open world. This is from the official website for Frontiers

But starfall islands? I was hoping we’d get open world exploration of classic areas of planet mobius, not limited to just this new island they created. This better be a massive island then.
islands, plural, also ti says open zone implying not exactly open world but zones of it
I already know that. “Open-zone” implies there’s only freedom within said zone, not an open hubworld or overworld.
They should port the gamecube games to be safe.
I’m actually surprised that Sonic Heroes or Shadow The Hedgehog never skyrocketed in price like the other Gamecube games did. Maybe it being cross platform has something to do with it?
What do you mean about that?
Breath of the sonic.
Sonic of the wild.
Sonic, Breath of the hedgehog.
The Hedgehog of Sonic: Wild of the Breath
Definitely gonna wait for some actual gameplay before making judgements on it.
Can’t trust Sonic Team anymore.
Although I will say… why the realistic looking environments? Sonic is way better when it’s ALL stylized/cartoony. Colors did it right… sigh.
Hopefully it’s good but I won’t hold my breath.
